When is "literal" too literal?

The Discourse is a remarkably fine piece of French prose designed to sell an idea to the masses. As Descartes wrote in a letter to Vatier, "even women" could read it! Unfortunately, this "literal" translation attempts to be so true to the words of the Discourse that it loses sight of the text and ends up almost unreadable. The accompanying essay collects comments on a range of topics-- some trivial, some important. This volume may serve as a convenient source of the French text. The accompanying English is best used only as a vocabulary crib.
