Product Description
A compelling tale of the borderlands, the magical realm that dances between our world and the world of mythic beasts, in which an elderly dragon, an impetuous flying horse and a wise winged cat join Ivan, almost eleven, and Marianna, twelve, on a quest for the lost city of Mythaca. Will they be able to overcome Maya, the elusive shape-changer who has foiled every quest for Mythaca before theirs? Will they learn to use the magical gifts they receive? Can they resolve the paradox that hides the key to Mythaca? And where, and what, is Mythaca?

This is a positively charming blend of mythology and fantasy. Two adolescents, friends Ivan and Marianna, represent the human world, but they lead us on a most merry expedition in the company of mythological or fantasy creatures, primarily Magellan the equus, Paracelsus the senior citizen dragon, and Icaria, the winged cat, all of whom are miniature-sized compared with Ivan and Marianna's usual size. Immediately after entering the fantasy world, the two youngsters join forces with the creatures (taking on the creatures' size) to embark on a quest for the creatures' long-fabled paradise, Mythaca, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the home city from which Ivan hails. (Marianna is a `country' friend of his.) The intrepid explorers take on myriad unpredictable obstacles, some of their own making, and the evil intent of Maya to prevent their success. The five main characters are very well and uniquely drawn. The quest and adventures make this enjoyable on many levels, including the role of trust and cooperation and good-will in pursuing one's goals. But just as much, this journey is terrific fun, creative, clever, well-put-together and very worth reading for a strong reading intermediate grades child or a middle school-aged one. There's plenty of action to keep the pages turning. It fits nicely with two other endearing mythology/fantasy books in my recent reading past, Michael Chabon's "Summerland" and Nancy Farmer's "Sea of Trolls", both likewise highly recommended. Neuhaus apparently has another book in the works. I look forward to it.

Spellbound for Mythaca

I loved the images in this book! The winged cat who reads history in the feathers in her work. Magellan, the equus -- definitely not a horse! -- who has flown around the world more times than he can remember. The author brings together these characters and more to take us on a journey to find the ancient Mythaca, a long-lost land. I was spellbound and not just by the spells cast by the endearing ancient dragon who seems to be hard of hearing.
