Product Description
Almost half of all pregnant women are overweight in the U.S. today, but there are few places they can turn for reliable information and helpful advice on the special set of challenges they'll face during the nine-month adventure that lies ahead. In Big, Beautiful and Pregnant, Cornelia van der Ziel, a highly sought-after obstetrician who specializes in plus-size pregnancies, and Jacqueline Tourville, a plus-size mom who's lived the experience, offer a warm, witty, medically-sound guide for overweight women who want the skinny on what to expect from pregnancy and childbirth. They answer all the questions pregnant moms may have, including: Is my pregnancy doomed to be difficult because I'm overweight? How can I find a sympathetic doctor? Am I destined for a c-section because of my extra pounds? Are there special medical risks to my unborn child? Where can I find maternity clothes in extra-large sizes? A unique combination of impeccable medical advice, fun, and down-to-earth charm, Big, Beautiful and Pregnant provides plus-size pregnant women with information, inspiration, a sense of sisterhood, and reassurance that they can have a healthy and happy pregnancy.

A Kind Book, But Lacking in Key Areas

The author is very gentle and starts with an important lesson on self-acceptance. The key to improving our health begins with accepting ourselves. For those of us in poor health, part of the root of this condition are hidden areas of our consciousness that are life negating, that do not want health.

What is so essential but not emphasized in the text is that extra pounds (along with pregnancy complications) is caused primarily by consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup. That's the synthetic sweetener in soda's and most processed foods. Healthy whole foods usually do not convert to excess body fat. The reason why many people are struggling with weight is poor food selection. Their body is STARVING for nutrients, and they do not know where to get these nutrients from, and then they default to unhealthy and overly sweet foods which satisfy the hunger but that do not contain enough vitamins and nutrients. The cure for many is to return to a nutrient rich diet, filled with good fats (saturated fats, which usually help rid the body of excess fat tissue) and proteins, which calm hunger, dissipate sweet cravings and provide nourishment.

While "big, beautiful and pregnant" does have some helpful dietary advice, I think it is missing the point in not addressing the root cause of key difficulties that a Plus-Size woman will face during pregnancy. By returning to a whole foods program, Plus-Size women can feel healthy, have energy, and make the best effort for a good birth outcome and a healthy pregnancy. What is key, is to avoid the processed and refined junk and convenience foods of today.

Please see Healing Our Children: Because Your New Baby Matters! Sacred Wisdom for Preconception, Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting (ages 0-6) for a detailed list and explanation of toxic foods, versus health promoting foods with an emphasis on truly nourishing ourselves and our children.

A Must Read for Plus-Size Women!

I purchased this book about a year ago and until today it just sat under my coffee table collecting dust; but let me tell you I am glad I finally picked it up and read it! It has tons of useful information for plus-size women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. It is filled with practical solutions for a healthy pregnancy. I purchased another plus-size pregnancy book as well and I found the information in it to be very general, much like any other pregnancy book. I could definitely tell that the authors have the experience they claim to (Dr. Cornelia with working with plus-size pregnant women and Ms. Tourville with being a plus-size mom). It was very easy to understand and fun to read. If you are torn between this book and another plus-size pregnancy book, this is the one to buy.

The only regret I have is not picking it up and reading it sooner!

I was immediately put off this book by the big BMI chart at the very beginning, and further put off by the nutrition advice. If there's any time you shouldn't be eating low-fat foods, it's when you're pregnant. The medical and exercise advice isn't anything you won't find in another book, and there is NO information on infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss.

I highly recommend The Mother of All Pregnancy books instead.

If you are a plus size woman that is pregnant or going to become pregnant I highly recommend this book. This book not only gives some medical advice but it also inserts a real life story at the start of each chapter which makes it more personal. It also gives great resources and it gives you questions to ask your medical provider at your next apt.
