Product Description
In this collection of new and revised essays Owen Chadwick, perhaps the most distinguished living historian of religion, writes on various aspects of the Oxford Movement and the English Church in the Victorian era. Along with studies of Newman, Liddon, Edward King and Henri Bremond are included more general essays surveying the reaction of the Established Church and on the nature of Catholicism. In particular, the revision of the long-unobtainable introductory essay, The Mind of the Oxford Movement, illustrates once again the profound contribution Owen Chadwick has made to our understanding of religion in Britain in the nineteenth century.

Fascinating episodic essays on the Oxford Movement
Rating (4)
Date: 2008-10-18

This collection of essays is probably worth owning based solely on the merit of the first essay: "The Mind of the Oxford Movement." But alas! many readers unfamiliar with the Oxford Movement might fail to appreciate the delicacy, insight and sensitivity with which Chadwick treats the leading Tractarians. The second essay on the limitations of Keble is brilliant and sensitive, but one might like to know a bit more about him in order to appreciate this essay. The subsequent essay on the Ecclesiastical Commission might leave many who are unfamiliar with the precise dynamics of the Church-State relations of Victorian England a bit mystified as to what this essay has to do with the Oxford Movement. Some readers also might want to know more about John Henry Newman than the fate of one his poems or his ill fated adversary, Charles Kingsley.
But other essays such as "The Oxford Movement and its Reminiscensers," "Henri Bremond and Newman," "The Young Liddon," and "Edward King" do a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of the Oxford Movement.
This is not an introductory work, but if one is already acquainted with the movement to some degree than the reader will find this an insightful and delightful read.

Captures the Tractarians brilliantly

The insight, high level of detail, wry but profound reflections, and brilliant wit Chadwick demonstrates in this volume combine to make it nothing short of brilliant. As one who has studied the Oxford Movement in some depth, I found Chadwick's conclusions, frank assessments, and unexpected details to be totally engrossing.

This is the perfect read for those who already have familiarity with the Tractarians. It has considerable merit as history in its own right, but would be puzzling for readers who were not already acquainted with Newman, Keble, Pusey, et al. It is not a history of the Oxford Movement in the common sense, but an intriguing series of essays about various aspects of the people and movements involved. Chadwick's wit is exceptional, and his treatment of major characters is, at once and in turn, deep, sympathetic, frank, and with hilarious comments slipped in during the process.

This book is invaluable for an in depth understanding of the Oxford Movement, presented in an engaging fashion that is as far from the ponderous and dreary writings of the 19th century as one could hope.
