Product Description
What turns a talented athlete into a true champion? Winning is the easy part -- it's when the going gets tough that the greats tap into a special spirit that overcomes adversity with grace. This heartfelt collection explores the important lessons offered by some of the sports world's best-known athletes and coaches, as they share insights on leadership, excellence, teamwork, and victory. Here are page after page of memorable quotes from Yogi Berra, Nadia Comaneci, Chris Evert, Wayne Gretzky, Florence Griffith Joyner, Grant Hill, Bela Karolyl, Tara Lipioski, Steve Young, and many more, all handwritten and signed on their personal stationery, and accompanied by a brief description of career highlights and biographical facts. This is pure inspiration, with the underlying message that it is not what you achieve that is important, but the underlying spirit in everything you attempt. Conceived in the truest spirit of sportsmanship -- royalties for the book support the athletes of the Special Olympics. This is a perfect gift for Father's Day or graduations, for athletes, teachers, or anyone else who strives for excellence, on the playing field or in the great game of life.

Formulaic series of messages from athletes
Rating (3)
Date: 2007-07-14
Athletics tends to be the most cliche-ridden area of human endeavor and the quotes appearing in this book reinforce that thought. It is a collection of a brief synopsis of one of the greatest athletes of the century is presented followed by a quote from that athlete. Since the synopsis is at most a long paragraph, there is very little background presented, so there is little in the way of context for the quote. Which really is not a major detriment, nearly every one of the quotes is so formulaic that you could have swapped them around randomly without a great deal of loss of meaning or confusion.

In this book, outstanding athletes share their words of wisdom. I like the fact that Lorne Adrain gives a synopsis of each athlete's background. Therefore, the book is educational and inspirational at the same time. I gave this book to my brother for his birthday --- He doesn't like to read but read every word of this book. Great gift.

I liked Lorne Adrain's first book ("The Most Important Thing I Know") and am very glad to see this new addition! It's great! The quotes from some of the best known (and some lesser known) sports heroes are compelling!

We have used Adrain's other book (The Most Important Thing I Know) as a gift for customers attending a technical presentation that our company gave. This book looks to be another opportunity -- and very inexpensive (comparitively).
