1997's Firefly was something of a mixed blessing for TNT fans. On the one hand, it marked a welcome return of a classic 80's melodic rock band, and it was good to see that they had apparently weathered the alternative rock storm of the early 90's. On the other hand, the band's style shifted noticeably with this album. I wouldn't call Firefly a "grunge TNT" album, but the band definitely took a more modern rock approach.

You can still see flashes of the old TNT, particularly in songs like Soldier of the Light and Somebody Told You, but for the most part this is a more restrained, less bombastic TNT. Ronnie Le Tekro's guitar playing seems deliberately muddier, and Tony Harnell seems to be doing his best Chris Cornell impression. The songs are still well written, but by changing the atmosphere so drastically they rarely feel like true TNT songs. Did the band really expect to win over alternative rock fans, even as that genre was dying prematurely?

Overall, Firefly is a solid album, but hardly a return to the TNT sound most of us fell in love with back in the day. It's never going to be anyone's favorite TNT album, but it's still one that any serious fan should own.

NOTE: The reissue of Firefly, titled Firefly and Live (how creative) includes a 5-song live performance of classic TNT hits, including 10,000 Lovers and Seven Seas. The live songs sound absolutely terrific, and stand in direct contrast to the more modern-sounding Firefly material. If you're planning on picking up a copy of Firefly, you should definitely try for this version.

Tony has such an awesome voice and Ronni's guitar playing is killer! But the band wouldn't be complete without Morty great bass playing! TNT rocks!

I like the old TNT did not like the studio albums but the live songs are awesome. Ronni Le Tekrö's solos are unbelievable. but when I listened Ronni's solo album I was shocked.there was almost no solo in his solo record amd it sounds like modern

A very good buy!

I bought my first TNT record in 1984, and I have been a true fan ever after. This Norwegian band really rocks. "Firefly" was long awaited when it came out, and it proved once again the potential of the band. TNT probably has the best heavy metal guitar player in the world today. Ronnie Le Tekroe is god. Forget all about Malmsteen, Satriani and all the other would-be guitar players. Ronnie stands second to none. The reason why I only give four stars is because TNT is moving away from their origin. The hard and heavy standard set in their release of "Knights of the new thunder" has somewhat dissappeard. But "Firefly" is a good buy, even though to a first time TnT listener I have to recomend "Knights of the new thunder", probably THE best heavy metal album of the 80's!

TNT's music is excellent in its form. I definitely recommend to sample the 1st track. Ronnie le Tekro is by far (to my view) the fastest shredder in the land. At times he holds back but when he lets go..wow! its really hard to tell if his executing tremolo's or shredding the fretboard, this guy is a virtuoso. He is crafty using melodies too. Harnell's vocals matches his guitar playing. Very talented musicians on top of their form. I like best the tracks "Tripping" & Firefly".
