At first, Americans saw wilderness as something to conquer. But after decimating half of the country's hardwood forests and almost all of its wild prairies, the nation began a conservation movement in the late 1800s that evolved into the present day National Park system. This half-hour video documents the movement from its roots in literature and photography to its implementation by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and others. Using a combination of vintage black-and-white footage, paintings, photographs, and 1930s-era posters, the filmmakers chronicle the growth of the park system from the original Yellowstone and Yosemite through the most recent additions of huge portions of Alaskan wilderness. The history of the national parks is amply illustrated, whether it is footage of post-depression Civilian Conservation Corps workers constructing roads and buildings or unenlightened visitors feeding garbage to bears. --Kimberly Heinrichs
