A large-sized beginning exerciser can find fitness classes and exercise videos daunting. Workout videos that show only slim and perfect hard bodies can be discouraging and alienating. Also, large-sized bodies need exercise routines designed specifically with moves and pacing that are safe and effective for them. The 1993 55-minute video Big on Fitness: Full Figure Aerobics attempts to fill that need. Kathy Bell and her roomful of large-sized exercisers in form-fitting leotards demonstrate a safe but not inspiring aerobic workout. Bell (no information given about her credentials) cues well and leads a safe class, but she rarely smiles or conveys energy or any spirit of fun. The aerobic moves, almost all done in one spot on the floor, are repetitious; there's a long series of heel digs, knees up, kicks, and marches in place, for example, just changing arm movements. Floor work follows the aerobics, then a stretch. The floor-work section titled "Stomach Exercises" does not really target the abdominals (especially with no instruction about contracting the abs and no evidence that the instructor is doing so) and may stress the lower back. (Richard Simmons' Sweatin' to the Oldies series is much more lively, varied, and enjoyable, while still being safe and friendly for large-size exercisers.) --Joan Price
Description
Finally an exercise video created specifically to meet the abilities and needs of the full-figured person. No more huffing and puffing to keep up with those 90 lb. aerobic instructors - now it's easy and fun to tone your body, burn fat, and increase your cardiovascular health in the comfort of your own home. Free target heart rate chart included. Great for men, teens and seniors, too! Length: 55 Minutes

My favorite exercise tape
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-01-12

I own many exercise tapes and DVDs, and this is my favorite.

For once, everyone in the tape is fatter than I am. (I'm 5 foot 4, 211 pounds, 51 years old.)

At first, I couldn't do the whole tape - but if these women, who are fatter than me, can do it, then I can do it, too. I kept at it, and I can now do the whole tape.

When I'm watching skinny 25 year olds on exercise tapes, I often think "Sure, it's fine for you to do that - you're young and strong and fit - but I can't do it". On the other hand, if these fat women can do it, so can I.

I feel comfortable and capable with this tape.

I just wish it was out on DVD. I'd re-buy it again in DVD format in a minute. There aren't many exercise tapes I'd be willing to buy a second time just to get them in my prefered format, but this is one of the few that I would. In fact, that's why I was looking at this product now; I was hoping to find it for sale in DVD.

Great!

.... This video is for women who are left out of other aerobics regimes - women who, for whatever reason and to whichever degree - are over what is currently deemed "average" body weight. There is no exhortation to "lose the flab" as in many of the tapes marketed to those who fall into that golden average. This tape mentions burning fat - for energy, not for weight loss. This is all about being healthy, supple and energized, not about negatives of losing, dropping, shedding or any of that other stuff. Kathy does smile, she's just not the giggling type. She reminds you to maintain proper form and breathing instead of relating how she trains with some yoga superstar in Tahiti. If you are someone who is down-to-earth and want a good exercise video to get you started on aerobic fitness, I HIGHLY recommend this tape.

I am so into this tape! I turn down the sound and turn up my favorite music and get into it. The instructor is a little sadate, thank god. I have seen a few of those hyper ladies and they just make me feel fat and stupid. But the women in this tape are real life women and I can keep up. I advised my mother to get the tape and would advise any overweight out of shape woman who is looking into starting an arobics program.

This video is great! It offers 5 sections: Warm up, Cardio 1, Cardio 2, Cardio 3, Cool down, Floor stomach and leg exercises, and stretches. Whew! I thought I could do this video with no problem but I underestimated it. This is a complete workout and I'm VERY happy with this purchsae.

This is the perfect workout - it gets my heart pumping, stretches my muscles, builds strength - and the instructor is clear and pays attention to special cases. Simple moves make this video easy to follow. It's divided into 5 sections, so it's easy to just do a short workout if you want.
