Quality Storytelling with an Exciting Musical Score
Rating (5)

I am a recent convert to "Rabbit Ears" videos...none have appeared on DVD to date, so these are buried treasures. Most of the animated folk tales are very well done. The story of John Henry (the boy who was born with a hammer in his hand) is recited in a folksy manner by Denzel Washington...but the music of B.B. King takes this simple film over the top. If you find this VHS interesting, take a look at the "Emperor and the Nightingale" - my personal favorite - or "How the Leopard Got His Spots" - all by Rabbit Ears. I have been showing these childrens'
movies to discriminating adults and all have very positive things to say...about the artwork, the content, and last but not least, the outstanding actors who have lent their voices to this series.

I read John Henry: An American Legend (Ezra Jack Keats) to my boys when they were 3 and 5 then found this video - they are now 5 and 7 and still can't get enough of either! Super narration and music - great action through storytelling!

I am now buying a copy for my son's Second Grade classroom teacher!

My nine-year-old heard about John Henry in school, found this tape in the library, and absolutely loves it. She's played it so much that she knows the narration and the music by heart and quizzes us on what has happened in the story. BB King's music adds a great touch (she sings that theme song all over the place), and Denzel is fabulous as the narrator. Many nights, this has been her bedtime story of choice.

The tape takes a legend with a good moral, tosses in some great music by a great musician, and stirs it up with narration which keeps the story moving yet allows emotions to be felt. There really isn't an age that's too "young" or "old" for this movie, but the kids that will like it the most are probably between first and fourth grades.
