This video takes you through the history of Tar Heels basketball from the very first game on January 27, 1911, to the national championship victory on April 5, 1993. It's pretty hard to capture the history and magic of so many incredible years in an hour and fifteen minutes, but Blue Heaven does as good a job as is humanly possible. Released in 1993, this was and still is a must-have resource for Carolina fans. Long-time supporters can relive the unforgettable memories of years gone by, while younger fans can come to better appreciate the rich tradition the rest of us are always going on about.
Naturally, the early years don't get a detailed treatment, but plenty of important facts are discussed. You'll hear about playing in the unheated "Tin Can" in the 1930s, be introduced to such legendary players as George "the Blind Bomber" Glamack and John "Hook" Dillon, and gain appreciation for the "White Phantoms" that claimed a national championship in 1924. Did you know Carolina had 13 coaches in its first 42 years (and had no coach at all in 1922 and 1923)?
The focus soon shifts to the 50s and the Frank McGuire era. With his underground railroad bring a steady stream of New York Catholic boys to Dixie, McGuire saw Carolina basketball really come into its own, culminating, of course, with the historic 1957 NCAA championship. A triple overtime win in the national semifinals got Carolina a shot at the title, and it took another triple overtime game for the mighty Kansas, led by Wilt Chamberlain, to go down at the hands of the scrappy Heels.
The Dean Smith years (33 and counting at the time) naturally take up the largest part of the video. You'll hear about the early, sometimes lean years, which even saw the young coach hanged in effigy in January 1965. Then, once you get to the last half of the 1960s, you get a blow-by-blow look at every individual season. There are amazing highlights to relive and incredible players to speak about: Billie Cunningham, Larry Miller, Bob McAdoo, Walter Davis, and oh so many others. You'll see how Charlie Scott (the first African-American athlete in the ACC) earned his nickname of Great Scott, relive the thrill of Dudley Bradley's historic steal and dunk to beat State in 1979, celebrate all over again Al Wood's incredible 39 point performance to beat Virginia in the Final Four in 1981, thrill to a whole highlight reel of unforgettable Michael Jordan moments (including, of course, "the shot" to win the 1982 national championship), etc. Of course, you also get to hear all about the greatest college basketball player of all time, Phil Ford. It all culminates in the story of the 1993 team that gave Dean Smith his second national championship in 1983.
Filled with historic photographs, classic game footage, and interviews with many a Tar Heel great then and now, Blue Heaven is a video every member of the Carolina family really ought to have in the old video library.
